Workshops

I teach a variety of lampshade making techniques, either as group classes or one-to-one. Details of all of my current classes are listed below (and on my Instagram page), or you can contact me via this website if you would like to find our more or enquire about making a booking.

I also offer one-to-one lampshade making tuition in all of the main disciplines (gathered, pleated and tailored). Each skill takes two days to learn, at a cost of £180 per day. Tuition can also be tailored to your exact requirements.

All of my courses are held at my workshop in Bath: The Long Barn, Manor Farm Buildings, Southstoke Lane, Bath BA2 7PQ. There is plenty of parking on site and the workshop is wheelchair accessible.

From time to time I also teach courses at West Dean College (all info and booking details can be found on their website) and at Master The Art (please see their website for dates and booking info).

For all Bath based courses, students should bring a basic sewing kit (scissors, needles, pins, tape measure, thimble), their own choice of top fabric (one metre of full width fabric will be sufficient) and a sewing machine if they have one. Unless otherwise stated, I will supply frames and plain ivory cotton lining fabric.

Tailored Lampshades

A one day course for students with some experience of lampshade making. In order to spend as much time as possible focusing on key skills, students MUST arrive with their lampshade frame already bound in cotton tape.  I will send information on suitable frame shapes/sizes and where to source them (though students are also welcome to bring their own frames if they have them).

Students will then be shown the skills needed to make a tailored lampshade : how to make a template and cut fabric for the lampshade, and how to make and fit the lining. Depending on timings there may also be time to fit the final trim in place, but it is assumed that students will already have experience of doing this, and so will be able to finish their lampshade in their own time.   The course involves both hand and machine sewing and is suitable for students with some experience of both.

Gathered Lampshades

A two day course in which you will be shown all of the skills needed to make your own gathered lampshade : how to bind the frame, measure and cut your fabric, line the lampshade, and finish it with your own choice of trimmings. The course mainly involves hand sewing, with a small amount of machine stitching to finish the trim. No previous experience of either is required, just a passion for textiles and the patience to sit and enjoy the process of sewing in a room full of fellow textile enthusiasts.

Gathered lampshades are best suited to lightweight fabrics. Suitable fabrics for include lightweight cottons, linens and silks. Curtain/cushion weight fabrics are best avoided.

Pleated Lampshades

A two day course in which you will be shown all of the skills needed to make your own pleated lampshade : how to bind the frame, measure and cut your fabric, line the lampshade, and finish it with your own choice of trimmings. The course mainly involves hand sewing, with a small amount of machine stitching to finish the trim. No previous experience of either is required, just a passion for textiles and the patience to sit and enjoy the process of sewing in a room full of fellow textile enthusiasts.

Pleated lampshades are best suited to lightweight fabrics. Suitable fabrics for include lightweight cottons, linens and silks. Curtain/cushion weight fabrics are best avoided.
